Peter Bergquist named March Teacher of the Month

A Q&A with March Teacher of the Month Peter Bergquist:

Name: Peter Bergquist

Years teaching in Monticello: 10

Tell us a little about yourself?
I grew up in Buffalo, MN with an unhealthy obsession with sports and books.  Nothing has changed on that front!  I have a wonderful wife, Brig, who is a teacher at Buffalo High School.  I have a 6 year old son named Rett, who is my mini-me.  I also have a 3 year old daughter named Louella, who is a total spitfire that makes me laugh and smile all day long.

Why did you choose the teaching profession?
I remember in Jr. High deciding that I was going to be the starting shortstop for the Minnesota Twins, or I was going to be a teacher.  A lack of athleticism, and a love of working with young people made that decision easy for me!

What is the best thing about teaching in Monticello?
The students and staff.  I know that sounds like a cookie-cutter answer, but it is true.  I absolutely love teaching literature to 8th graders, and there is nothing else I could see myself doing.  The students here in Monti are amazing.  The staff that I work with is incredible.  I have made so many lifelong friends here.  They are not only great friends, but great teachers as well!  A special shout out to team 8-2.  They are so great at what they do.  I’m pushed on a daily basis by the other 8th grade English teacher, Frannie Pearson, to be the best teacher I can be.  If I don’t strive for that, I’ll never keep up with her!

What is your proudest moment as a teacher?
I’ve been chosen twice by the Senior class to attend graduation as a Favorite Teacher.  No award could be more meaningful.  The reason I do this is always for the students.  For them to appreciate my teaching style (which can be unique) is all that matters to me!

What advice would you give a young adult who is thinking about a teaching career?
This job can be hard, but if you love it, it will be the most rewarding career imaginable.  You can’t fake this job.  If you love your students (and  your content), this job will be so fulfilling to your soul.  I’m always so thankful that I have my dream job.  Thanks to all my students, past and present, for making this job so amazing!
