EMM names Becky Arthur as the March teacher of the month

Name and years in the district?
My name is Becky Arthur and I have had the pleasure of teaching first and second grade at Little Mountain Elementary for 17 years!

Tell us a little about yourself?
I am a small town North Dakota girl who married the love of my life, Chad, in 1995.  Our 3 daughters have all gone through the Monti school system. Alexus (class of 2014) is married and a television reporter in Lexington, Kentucky.  Taylor (class of 2017) is attending Northwest Missouri State, majoring in elementary ed. Allyson (class of 2019) is finishing her senior year in Italy on foreign exchange through our Monticello Rotary.  She will attend Wichita State in the fall.

Why did you choose the teaching profession?
I chose to become a teacher because I love kids and learning.  My students teach me new things each and every day!

What is the best thing about teaching in Monticello?
I have taught in three different states in four different schools and Little Mountain has by far been my favorite place to teach.  Not only do I get to teach and collaborate with my good friends, I also had the privilege to watch my own children and their friends grow up in this amazing community and school system.

What is your proudest moment as a teacher?
My proudest moments are catching the ah ha moments in a 7-8 year old.  Watching the lightbulb go on is so rewarding! I also enjoy seeing my adult student teachers experience a successful lesson and connect with the students.

What advice would you give a young adult who is thinking about a teaching career?
Three pieces of advice I would pass along to new teachers:

  1. Develop strong relationships with each of your students.
  2. Tap into your peers for knowledge and insight.
  3. Have fun!
