EMM names Corey Derby Teacher of the Month for February
Name: Corey Derby
Years teaching in Monticello: 21
Tell us a little about yourself.
I grew up on a farm in Verndale MN. I graduated from Bemidji State University in 1998. I taught 9 years at the middle school and the past 12 years at the high school. My wife Monica is a teacher at Pinewood. My son Riley is a sophomore and my daughter Summer is a 6th grader. I enjoy hanging out with my family, working out, and working on projects. I am currently working on restoring a Ford tractor my Dad used when he started farming.
Why did you choose the teaching profession?
In high school I took many different Industrial Technology classes. As I got older I found myself helping other classmates work on their projects more than I worked on my own. I really enjoyed sharing my skills and knowledge to help others.
What is the best thing about teaching in Monticello?
The best thing about teaching in Monticello is to be able to witness our great teachers in action each and every day! As a parent of children that attend Monticello schools, I know they are cared for and that they are in good hands. I work with some amazing, dedicated, and hardworking teachers that tirelessly put their students first.
What is your proudest moment as a teacher?
After teaching for 21 years I have been blessed to have many moments that have made me proud to be a teacher. One moment that I always look forward to is when we send off the senior class on their last day. Some of my students have taken classes with me all four years of high school. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to watch them mature from freshman into young women and men. Knowing that I have played a part in helping prepare them for that moment is very rewarding.
What advice would you give a young adult who is thinking about a teaching career?
Every career will have positives and negatives. If teaching is something that you feel is your calling you should listen to your heart and not the news. When you think about someone who has had the most impact in your life there is a good chance that person is a teacher. Be the person who will impact the next generation!
