    Dear Distance Learning Families,

    Picture Retake Day

Picture retakes will take place at Pinewood Elementary from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. on Monday, October 12th.  This time pictures will take place in the East gym.  Please park your vehicle and enter the building through Door 7,  the entrance with the canopy.  A staff member will be there to greet you and direct you to the correct location.  This is a different location than previous picture day.  See attachment for additional information.

    Campus Payments

Each school year, we request $10 per student on the Class Supply list for a Class Fund.  We would like to continue this for Distance Learning too.  At this time, parents can make payments in real-time by using a credit/debit card, checking or savings accounts in Parent Portal.  Please see attachment for directions.  If you have already made payment, this will be displayed in Parent Portal.  We are hoping to have this paid by the end of October.  Campus Payment for Parents

    Safety Drills

Our district strives for several different goals. Our single most important priority is student safety and building security. Another valued goal is strong and clear communication. With those things in mind, I want to inform you that we had our first preplanned lockdown drill at Pinewood.

In order to make this safety training as effective as possible, we shared with students and staff that a lockdown drill would take place at 9:55 a.m. The drill was over by 9:06 a.m. Today’s drill focused on letting students and staff hear the lockdown message over the public address system and to have classroom teachers review lockdown procedures. Students were with s teacher during the drill.  Educators and administrators will also be available to follow up with students if they have any questions following the drill.

Minnesota state statute requires schools to have 5 fire drills, 5 lockdown drills and 1 severe weather drill.  So far, we have completed four fire drills and today’s lockdown drill.

We assure you that we will continue to spend time, money, and energy investing in the best safety and security practices in order to create the best, most secure possible learning environment for “Every Kid, Every Day.”

Enjoy the warm weather this weekend,

    Hello Pinewood Families,

At the start of the month, Pinewood shares the “Pinewood Press” which includes important dates and information for families.  Feel free to print and post on the refrigerator at your house(s)!

It is difficult to believe one month of school has already passed.  The students are getting into the routine of wearing masks, mask breaks, eating in their classroom, zones at recess and other safety precautions we have implemented at Pinewood. Thank you for your support, understanding and caring during the start of the school year.  I know we will have a great October too!

    Dear Distance Learning Families,

We are excited to announce that we are hosting our first Distance Learning Family Night. We hope you will be able to join us next Wednesday, October 7th from 5:30-8pm at the Monticello High School. We will start with a pizza dinner and then move into the auditorium. The purpose of our Distance Learning Family night is to build connections with other families and also meet the team of people supporting distance learning behind the scenes. We are dedicated to making sure our distance learners and their families are supported and have their questions answered. More information and the RSVP can be found on this attached flier. Distance Learning Family Night.pdf

We also wanted to pass along a few other reminders about the distance learning program that we feel are important to make a successful learning experience:

    • It’s important that distance learners have an adult who is able to assist when needed. Our students often need reminders or assistance with technology to be successful.

    • Please make sure the students are not receiving help when they are given tests or assessments from their teachers. We understand it may be difficult not to give hints or clues when your child doesn’t know the answer, however, test results help guide future instruction by giving the teacher a full view of student’s learning during a certain period of time.

    • At some point during the school year, our distance learning teachers may need to be absent. If a teacher is absent for a short period of time (1-2 days), they will post learning activities to Seesaw but will not have live instruction. If a teacher is going to be absent for a longer period of time, we will have a substitute teacher fill in. We are currently in the process of training our substitute teachers for distance learning applications.

    • Please ensure your child’s workspace is set up for success.  All materials should be readily accessible on a daily basis. Chromebooks must be charged at night. Help your child to choose a work space where distractions can be avoided.

    • Reminder that materials/envelopes from school must be picked up by the end of the school day on Friday.  One suggestion is to keep the envelope sealed until Monday morning.  Another suggestion is to keep materials/envelopes in a student's backpack for safe keeping.

Thank you for your support and dedication to our kids!

Spanish Copy of Distance Learning Family Night.pdf

  • Parent Update - Sept. 21, 2020

Posted by Linda Borgerding on 9/24/2020 4:30:00 PM

    Dear Pinewood In-Person Families,

Pinewood has completed two full weeks!  There are still a few activities being tweaked at this time, but we are seeing success with wearing masks, eating lunch in the classrooms, zones at recess, dismissal and in general, getting outside more often.

Picture Day – Friday, September 25

The school district has changed vendors from Lifetouch to Jostens this year.  Attached is the picture flyer with information on how to view and order pictures.  This is a very different process than what we have used in the past.  Other than the taking of the pictures, the school is not involved with ordering or delivery of pictures.

Free and Reduced Meal Application for 2020-2021

Reminder to complete the Free and Reduced Meal Application for 2020-2021.  Even though the Monticello School District is able to provide free school breakfasts and lunches to all ISD 882 students until December 31, 2020 or until funds run out through the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), we still need families to complete the Free and Reduced Meal Application for 2020-2021.  Completing these applications is vitally important for a number of reasons:

    • If a student qualifies, the benefit could extend to other fees such as activity fees.
    • School districts do not know when the USDA benefits will run out, so it is best to complete an application to have a seamless transition back to the National School Lunch Program when it occurs.
    • School districts receive additional funds based on the number of students who qualify for free or reduced benefits that help the school district hire more Reading and Math Intervention staff or Title I staff which is critical from many students.

Safety Zone Drop Off Time Will Change to 8:55 a.m. Starting Sept. 21

After monitoring Safety Zone Drop Off for two weeks, Pinewood is going to move the release time back to 8:55 a.m. instead of 8:50 a.m. starting Monday, September 21. This will shorten the time students are waiting in the hallways by the office before going to their classroom at 9:00 a.m.

Thank you for your patience, flexibility and grace during the first two weeks of school as we figure out the best way to educate your child(ren) in these times.

    Have a wonderful weekend~
